We Are All Connected - 7th Principle - Butterfly Creepy Crawlies

Join us as we explorer our connection to this planet we call home. Summer class is for ages 4-10. Older children are welcome to participate as helpers. Childcare is available for children under the age of 4.

Classes meet from 10:30 - 11:30 during the summer session.

Programs for 2007— 2008

Classes by Age Level

First Service (9:30-10:30 a.m.) class groupings will be: Nursery care for children birth through age two, preK-kindergarten and multi-age class for 1st through sixth grades. All children not in the nursery must be toilet trained and able to participate appropriately.

Second Service (11:15 a.m.- 12:15 p.m.) class groupings will be: Nursery care for children birth through age two; Preschool for children 3-4 years old; Kindergarten - 1st Grade; Primary Grades 2 - 3; Intermediate Grades 4 - 5; Junior Youth Group Grades 6-8; High School Grades 9-12. Please note: High School youth begin at 10:45 a.m.

These class groupings are subject to change to accommodate the needs of the children and youth and changing enrollment.

Pillar topics

Pillars are thematic units or modules used throughout a year of religious education programming. These pillars are presented during the second session in different ways for different age groups, so children learn new insights into each area at their own developmental level.

Preschool

A Discovering Year
Preschoolers will be nurtured in their piritual and religious growth through connections to their everwidening environment. they explore selves, friendships, families, church, nature, and religious and cultural days. Through interactive lessons that speak to many ways of learning, they will discover their place in their UU community. A Discovering Year was written by Richard and Tirrell Kimball as part of the "Sheltering Spirit" curriculum series.
September 9 - June 1
Multi-age for 1st - 5th grade (first service) CLif Notes RE Express
Children will be guided through the Church of the Larger Fellowship (CLF) curriculum called RE Express (CLif Notes). This curriculum is written by Rev. Dr. Lynn Ungar and is specifically designed for smaller multi-age groups. Each week will include opening and closing words, centering, activities, and adiscussion topics. Each month contains a session for: UU Identity, going to the Sources, Stories of Faith, and Worship.

  Roots and Shoots Chapter – UU Youth Involved
Roots and Shoots is the Jane Goodall Institute’s environmental and humanitarian program for youth. Its mission is to foster respect and compassion for all living things, to promote understanding of all cultures and beliefs, and to inspire each individual to take action to make the world a better place for animals, the environment and the human community. Roots and Shoots meetings for all ages (preschool through high school) will be held at both services during the "Sharing Our Gifts" pillar from Thanksgiving until January.

  Sharing Our Gifts - Social Action (Winter Pillar)
Giving of oneself will be the focus of these Sundays. Children will take part in service projects that benefit those in our neighborhood and local are. We plan to conduct a canned food drive, do a Roots & Shoots project for the birds, and celebrate Hanukkah.

K-5th Grade
(second service)
Welcoming Congregation
Using various sources, the children will explore family diversity and how we welcome all kinds of people and families into our congregation.
September 9 - November 18
  UU Sources
This UU Identity pillar will focus on "the sources of our living tradition" adapted from the RE Express Curriculum CLif Notes. We will also add a refresher on our Seven Principles with the goal of creating a deeper understanding and ability to articulate what guides our faith in action.
January 6 - January 27
  Tapestry of Faith
We are excited to implement the brand new beta version of the UUA Faith Development program called Tapestry of Faith. Age-appropriate curriculum will be used to weave the four strands of this program together in a meaningful way. The strands are Ethics, Faith Development, Spirituality and UU Identity.
February 3 - June 1
6th-8th grade Young Youth Group
Led by our Young Youth Advisors, the Young Youth will meet on Sunday mornings form 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 at the parish house. This year they will be questing, as they seek and develop their own answers to questions about human faith and the web of all existence. The Questing Year was written by Richard and Tirrell Kimball as part of the "Sheltering Spirit" curriculum series. The young youth will have the opportunity to participate in social events such as skating, bowling, pizza parties, and other fun stuff. All youth must be registered to participate in cons, field trips and overnights!
September 9 - June 1
9th -12th grade Senior High Youth Group
Jen Hill, staff Youth Advisor, will facilitae our youth group this year along with other youth-adult allies. The youth have a well-rounded program that includes: District Youth Conferences (cons) in fall and spring; fundraising activities (like the Great Fiasco Coffeehouse and Talent Show); service to the community and congregation; and leading a worship service. Meetings will be held during the second service from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Parish House. The fourth Sunday of the month is "movie matinee day" with pizza and thought-provoking video viewing and discussion. Movie Matinees will last a bit longer than the usual meetings. Youth will have opportunities to go on field trips and participate in overnight "retreats" throughout the year. All youth must be registered to participate in cons, field trips and overnights! Fall Youth Con will be held in Spokane, WA on Oct. 26-28
September 9 - June 1
4th - 6th Grade Our Whole Lives (OWL)
This curriculum is one of the components of the OWL lifespan sexuality education program. This component focuses specifically on learning about and discussing the physical and emotional changes of puberty. There will be a parent orientation prior to the first session to further explain the curriculum. This class will be offered during first service.
April 6 - June 1
10th - 12th Grade Our Whole Lives (OWL)
This curriculum is one of the components in the OWL lifespan sexuality education program. This component is a comprehensive approach to human sexuality in an age-appropriate manner. It is based on the values of respect, responsibility, justice and inclusiveness. The course will help young people to apply these values to their behavior and will provide them with skills they can use throughout life. There will be a mandatory parent orientation prior to the first session to further explain the curriculum. An additional fee of $20 per student will be charged to offset expenses.

Children will begin in the adult worship service each Sunday for the invitation to worship and be dismissed to their classes after Spirit of Life. classes will end at 10:35 and 12:20.
